Staff and students from our Department of Computer Science have been helping primary school -age girls build websites at an event aimed at inspiring the female technology leaders of the future.

Hatfield Lionesses

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first women students at Hatfield (our ‘Lionesses), the College is establishing a one-year Masters scholarship for a female student from a developing country where access to higher education for women is limited. We would be grateful if alumni could promote the Lioness Scholarship to any in-country contacts you may have. Full details of the scholarship and more information on the fund.

Class Notes

Dr Ben Medlock MBE (Computer Sciences, St John's College, 1999-2002)

Dr Ben Medlock returned to the University to share the story of his journey, from an undergraduate student at Durham to navigating the growth and acquisition of a global multi-million pound business.

Andrew Blowers OBE (Geography, Hatfield College, 1959-62)

Professor Andrew Blowers OBE was selected to receive the Alexander and Ilse Melamid Medal for his “outstanding work on the dynamic relationship between human culture and natural resources.”

Jay Burgess (Politics, Van Mildert College, 1966-67)

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev awarded Jay Burgess with the Medal of the Order of the Madara Horseman, First Class. For Jay's efforts over 40 years in helping develop US - Bulgarian economic and commercial relations.

Marcus Paul (Arts Combined, St John's College, 1970-73) had his first book The Evil That Men Do endorsed by the Bishop of Leeds and the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and also by Dr Michael Green, Fellow of Wycliffe Hall Oxford.

Stephen C Fletcher (Education, College of St Hild and St Bede, 1977-78) has had the book The Road to Hastings 978-1066 published.

College of St Hild and St Bede

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break and wish you the very best for 2019. Since then, another congregation has come and gone. Durham was full of pride and joy as the graduates shook the Chancellor’s hand and were confirmed in their degrees, and we are all obviously delighted to welcome them to our Hild Bede alumni community.

Hatfield College

We’ve jumped right into the New Year with lots happening around College, hosting a successful Winter Dinner, and celebrating our Winter graduates’ success!
Coming up: Our All Male No More! exhibition opens on Friday 22 February, telling the story around the first admittance of women to Hatfield College in 1988. Keep an eye out for updates here.

John Snow College will be based at Rushford Court for the academic year 2019/20.

St Cuthbert's Society

The latest issue of the Cuthbert’s Chronicle, our biannual alumni magazine, is out now. In this issue, read about the history of House 12, the stories of Cuthsmen who fought in WW1, as well as contributions and memories from alumni.

A huge congratulations to all Mary’s students that graduated this month. Our college graduation meal was a delight with a lot of positive feedback. A special mention to our honorary guests who were 1969 alumni, it was a pleasure to welcome you back! Also a big thank you to all Mary’s alumni that turned out for our London Event. I hope you enjoyed it as much as the staff did. It was great to reminisce and talk with so many familiar faces!
