World University Rankings
 

We have recorded our highest ever number of subjects in the top 100 of a major international league table.

Eighteen of our subjects are now ranked among the very best globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019, up from 16 in the top 100 last year.

Ten subjects feature in the world top 50, up from nine last year.

A Fantastic Result for Women's Basketball
 
Congratulations to our Palatinates who made history last weekend: reaching their first ever major final, after beating recent Women's British Basketball League Cup winners, the Sheffield Hatters, at the WBBL trophy semi-finals! We’ll be wishing them very best of luck as they head to the Emirates Arena for the WBBL Trophy Final on Sunday 10 March!

Music Masterclasses
 

From 22 to 23 February, we welcomed ex-student Daniel Ludford-Thomas (Music, College of St Hild and St Bede, 1992-95) back to Durham, where as an undergraduate he sung as a Cathedral scholar alongside studying for his degree. Since leaving Durham, he has gone on to enjoy great success and now has a busy schedule as a conductor, chorus master and singing teacher in London. Among other things, he has recently been Chorus Master for the Choir of Enlightenment, preparing them for numerous performances under the baton of Marin Alsop at the BBC Proms and in the Royal Festival Hall. Daniel has also worked behind the scenes for BBC2’s The Choir: Sing While You Work with Gareth Malone.

Jon Vlassopulos (Chinese and Management, Van Mildert College, 1993-97) and Esther Crawford (International Relations, Middle East, Ustinov College, 2011-15) have had their apps featured in Apple's AppStore.
TheTribalist app makes it easy and fun to create lists of things you love like movies, TV, books and restaurants and Esther Crawford's super cool Squad app that allows you to screen share with your friends.

Rob Larter is leading an international science expedition
 
Rob Larter (Geology, Van Mildert, 1979-82) had headed to the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica, leading on an international science expedition. Rob has been awarded the Polar Medal for his service to polar science.

John Archer-Thomson (Ecology, Graduate Society, 1978-79) is the joint author of Rocky Shores Volumn 7 of the British Wildlife Collection published by Bloomsbury Publishing.

Jock Wishart (Arts Combined, College of St Hild and St Bede, 1971-74) and the Celtic Commodores Cup Team won the RYA Scotland Performance of the Year Award after being up against nominations across a broad range of competitive boating.

Michelle Hockley (History, St Cuthbert's Society, 1996-99) has published her novel Before Spring Came Summer, based on true events from her Historian research and expertise in the seventeenth century and the royal court.


Sharifullah Dorani (Government and International Affairs, Ustinov College, 2011-2015) has his book America in Afghanistan: Foreign Policy and Decision Making From Bush to Obama to Trump published by I. B. Tauris and Bloomsbury.

Tanith Carey (English Literature, Collingwood College, 1985-88) has recently published What is my Child Thinking? as well as The Friendship Maze one of which has a quote of endorsement from our own Professor Joe Elliott.

On 29 January, The Rt Hon Lord (Anthony) Hughes of Ombersley led a panel with fellow Durham graduates Melanie QC, Angela Patrick and others for an insight to the Bar discussion with the Honourable Society of Inner Temple. Lord Hughes was from Durham Law School's first graduating class and the first to join the UK Supreme Court. The event was a major success doubling on the previous year's attendance with 200 students participating.
