The Invisibility of Women's Sport Damages the Next Generation of Sportswomen
 
"It didn’t cross my mind that football was something girls could do. I didn’t question the messages media and wider society drip-fed me. Thankfully, I would, later, find a home playing football at Durham University..." On International Women's Day 2019, alumna Nat Jackson (Law, St Mary's College, 2003-06) from Totally Runable highlighted the insidious effects that a lack of attention to women's sport can have on the mind of a young aspiring sportswoman - and called for urgent change.

Delia-Maria Asser (Modern Languages, St Aidan's College, 2011-15) has reached the finals of the 15th series of MasterChef UK.

Ella Parry-Davies (Arts Combined, St Cuthbert's Society, 2007-11) was named a 2019 'New Generation Thinker' and will be speaking at the Radio 3 Free Thinking Festival.

Gabriel Cantu (Law, St Cuthbert's Society, 2005-08) accepted a position as in-house counsel for a Native American tribe located in Bellingham, the Lummi Nation. Gabriel is the only Durham law grad to ever have taken such a position.

Gavin Murphy (Law, International and European Legal Studies, Graduate Society, 1997-98) hosted Durham University alumni and friends for his annual holiday season party in Ottawa for the eighth consecutive year. There were a record 20 guests in attendance with graduates ranging from the class of 1958 to a 2008 alumnus. Any Durham graduates who want to know more about the local alumni chapter can contact Gavin.

Henry Timms (History, Collingwood College, 1995-98) has been appointed CEO of the Lincoln Centre in New York.

Jacquetta Gomes (Economic History and Sociology, St Aidan's, 1972-75) has been acknowledged as the first female Buddhist Fire Chaplain in the world.

Len Pannett (Mathematics, Collingwood College, 1989-92) has his book Supercharg3d: How 3D Printing WIll Drive Your Supply Chain published by Wiley.

Liam Gill (Management Studies, Grey College, 2017-19) enjoys startup success with technology business 'Fumarii'.

Margaret Manchester (Archaeological Survey, 1999-2001) business 'Durham Hens Limited' won 'Best Rural Retail Business' at the Rural Business Award national final in Worcestershire.

Mel Ayton (Historical Research, 1985-87) will have a new edition of his book The Forgotten Terrorist published in May with a Foreword by Harvard Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz.

Sara Thornton (Philosophy and Politics, Trevelyan College, 1981-84) head of the Police Chiefs' Council talks on managing stress and how to have a successful career

Sue Primmer (English Literature, 1987-94) Director of Marketing & Communications at financial services consultancy Catalyst Development Ltd has been invited to receive the Freedom of the City of London. Her invitation comes as part of a move by the City of London Corporation to recognise ‘100 Women’, a century after women first gained the vote.

Tiffany Hall (Natural Sciences, Trevelyan College, 1982-85) is Cancer Research UK's CIO and was recently named CIO of the Year at the Women in IT Awards, the world's largest tech diversity event dedicated to tackling the sector's gender imbalance.

Professor David Held, who died suddenly on 2 March after a short illness, was one of the most influential and individual political theorists of his generation. He was also a gracious, generous and relentlessly curious colleague, and someone whose forward-looking attitude made him an immensely supportive supervisor to his many PhD students and mentor to junior colleagues.
