St Cuthbert's Society

January 2022

On the announcement of the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2022, we would like to congratulate Lance Corporal Danielle Marie Collingridge-Moore MBE (Geography, St cuthbert's Society, 2008)  - Military division of the New Years Honours 2022, Army Awards category, Promotions in and appointments to the military division of the most excellent order of the British Empire

Mrs Joan Norton

We were sad to hear that Joan Norton died on 22nd December 2021. Joan was particularly well known to members of the Society who were here between 1985 and 1990, while her husband John was Principal. Joan's energetic support of the Society continued long into retirement and she came to know many later arrivals to our community too. We will miss her greatly. St Cuthbert's Reception staff (12 South Bailey, Durham, DH1 3EE) will be able to forward letters of sympathy to John Norton for those who would like to write to him and we send our deepest condolences to him at this time.

New Chaplain

Welcome to Revd Dr Julia Candy, new chaplain of St Cuthbert's Society and Hatfield. Her licensing service took place on Monday 17th January 2022 in Hatfield college chapel. Julia is keen to be a support to anyone at Cuth's regardless of whether they have a faith or not, and to offer a non-judgemental, caring space where difficulties and problems can be heard, and important questions can be asked without necessarily being able to find an answer.

Please read more about Julia on our weekly bulletin here.

Principal’s Retirement Formal 16th June 2021

Although it was sad not to be able to gather in the dining hall for this event, Zoom allowed the participation of current students, alumni, SCR members, college and University staff including the Vice Chancellor in a wonderful evening brilliantly organized by Vice Principal Jon Warren and his committee. Tributes were given by Jeremy Cook (PVC Colleges and Student Experience), Saskia Wootton-Cane (JCR President), Ted Gup (Fellow and former IAS Fellow and writer in residence), Imogen Usherwood-Bliss (finalist in English, former editor of Palatinate, and President of 12 South, Cuth’s Drama Society), and Prof Martyn Evans (former Principal of Trevs). Elizabeth was presented (virtually) with a magnificent painting on vellum by Judy Hurst, Fellow and former artist in residence, with symbols of Cuth’s and of her research interests.

All the speeches were recorded and will soon be available via our website. A Principal’s Leaving Fund to create bursaries for graduating students who have won places to study performing arts is being created. Information about how to donate will be available very soon.

Queen’s Birthday Honours

Congratulations to alumna Norma Higton (formerly Rook, Economics, 1977), who has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the community in Wragby, Lincolnshire during Covid-19. Norma was Cuth’s first female bar steward in 1976.

End of term activities

When the JCR Awards (Colours and DLBs) were given out in the garden of no. 12, the citations were moving and the range of activities and achievements celebrated most impressive, specially in this very challenging year. In spite of Covid restrictioins some end of term activities have been possible, though not in their usual forms. Mini Formals have been held in college, and a Ball (without dancing) at Hardwick Hall; Cuth’s Day was in a huge tent on the racecourse. The Cuth’s spirit remains strong!

June 2020

Every June in the run up to Cuth's Day the Society hosts a series of events celebrating the arts in our community, and showcasing the talents and achievements of our members. This year virtual events have been planned from Sunday 14 June to Friday 26 June. They include the Art Show, talks on St Cuthbert and on the history of our Bailey houses, a playreading, and a cricket quiz.

One of the art prizes went to a portrait of our much missed porter Wayne Turfrey. You can see all the entries at: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/13YgjrxIC0qFqDkj4HujwxbxwfUZ9Fjyi?fbclid=IwAR1T8jnFXI_oJNUt4TiWXRhJQXo4oqDiU8CIr5jtxqYjAKyl-1B43KqbENo

Congregation ceremonies have been deferred to April 2021, though degrees will of course be granted this summer. We are having a virtual Finalists’ Formal on July 1st, with former JCR and SU President Millie Tanner, now in the police, as our Inspiring Woman speaker.

Virtual Alumni Day: save the date, Saturday September 12th (TBC - details to follow).
