St Aidan's - May 2021

At risk of rolling out again the hackneyed phrase ‘a year like no other’, it is fair to say that this year was truly unprecedented in many ways. Like many of us, the St Aidan’s Senior Common Room was tossed and turned on the ever tumultuous and unpredictable Covid wave; plunged into uncertainty, we nevertheless determined with our new Executive Team early in the new year, to rise to the challenge of adapting our usual events and activities to correspond with our new remote and virtual lifestyles.

Throughout this academic year, we have held many accessible events, including pizza parties within bubbles or online, with pizza provided by us! Our programme of virtual events this year has allowed us to interact and socialise with students, staff and guests from all over the world, from the US to Australia to China or even those simply isolating in Durham.

One of our key activities which runs throughout the year is our SCR lecture series where, in fitting with our namesake as the Rainbow College, we invite a wide inclusive diversity of speakers to tell us their story or teach us something about their research. In 2021, we welcomed three inspiring women for International Women’s Day: internationally-renowned pool player Monica Webb who spoke to us about mental fortitude and ambition in the world of sport, trans-rights activist Monica Helms who spoke to us about her journey to the creation of the Trans-rights flag and her recent autobiography, and a community musician with cerebral palsy who spoke to us about the difficulties she has faced as a disabled woman and her determination to make music accessible for all. Earlier in the academic year, we welcomed a talk from fellow student Dan Takyi on solidarity with the black rights movement and a native Palestinian about her life as a young woman growing up in Gaza.

We have two upcoming events for the Easter term, in May a speech by Emily Scurrah on Intersectional Economics and in June, we welcome the cosmologist and professor Carlos Frenk CBE, Fellow of the Royal Society and highly decorated for his manifold influential contributions to the world of science.
