In this lecture, ‘the extinction and survival of religious belief in a science dominated world’, Professor David Wilkinson will address the question of whether the growth of science and technology will lead to the extinction of religious belief or whether we are now hearing a dialogue between science and theology.
Professor Wilkinson is a Methodist minister, theologian, astrophysicist and academic. He is the Principal of Durham University’s St John's College and is a professor in the University’s Department of Theology and Religion. Earlier in his academic career, he gained a PhD in the study of star formation, the chemical evolution of galaxies and terrestrial mass extinctions. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and can frequently be heard as a contributor to Thought for the Day on BBC Radio 4.
Following the lecture, drinks and a light supper will be hosted by Professor Karen O’Brien FRSA, Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University.
