Alumni Telephone Appeal 2022

Our annual telephone appeal took place from 7 February - 3 March 2022 and received pledges of more than £250,000.

The appeal raised vital funds for the Student Opportunities Fund, which provides bursaries and employability grants for students in need of financial support. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and friends we can ensure that all students, irrespective of background or circumstances, have the opportunity to realise their potential.

The calls made during the campaign were a fantastic opportunity for our student callers to gain valuable advice and inspiration for the future. Thank you to all alumni that took the time to speak to our students, your support is greatly appreciated by the whole team.

If you pledged a gift during the campaign and would like to give online, you can do so here

Meet the team

The success of this appeal would not have been possible without our fantastic team of student callers. They came from a wide range of colleges and courses and due to their enthusiasm for Durham life and interest in helping others through the Student Opportunities Fund, they didn't disappoint! Below you can read about some of our brilliant team members.

Professor Corbridge

Jia-Ning

I am a first-year student currently studying Business and Management. Currently, I work as an Ambassador in Oppidan Foundation and volunteer as a mentor in Oppidan Foundation Mentoring. I'm also involved in lots of extracurricular activities including the F1 society,  Hild Bede Theatre and Enactus Incubation team. I also attend college volleyball practice sessions every week.

The environment and people are what I love about Durham, the greenery and kindness in people always remind me of home.

Shannon

I’m a first year student at St. Mary’s College and I’m studying biology.

Outside of my studies, I’m involved in lots of societies around the university that range from theatre to sport, and I’m currently in the process of setting up my own society! My favourite thing about Durham University is all of the ways that you can develop yourself alongside your degree. There are so many opportunities to get involved with and it’s so strongly encouraged, which makes the experience so unique and personal to each individual.

I’m excited to be on this campaign and have the opportunity to talk to alumni about their experiences at Durham.

Joe

During my gap year last year, I spent a month in the Costa Rican rainforest doing ecology and conservation work before travelling across the country and on to Mexico and Guatemala. Over this time I began speaking to the locals and taking day classes.

While I now read Philosophy, I have been fortunate enough to be able to take a Spanish module this year and continue learning and improving.

One of my favourite hobbies (and a necessity for a Monday 9am!) is cycling in Durham, which is made especially challenging and rewarding by its iconic hills. I am excited to be on the calling team because I have already received so many benefits since arriving in September and I would like to be able to help enable others to benefit also.

Naomi

I’m an undergraduate in my second year studying Law at Durham University. I’m also the Social Media Officer for Durham University’s African and Caribbean Society.

One thing I love about Durham University is its collegiate system which fosters togetherness and really makes you feel like you have some form of family in your college. Having that one thing (your college) in common with so many people goes a long way!

I’m excited to be on the calling team because I get to talk to alumni not only about philanthropic support they may be able to give to the University but also about their own experiences while they were a student.

Yana

My name is Yana and I'm studying Economics. In addition to being in love with the eye-opening and thought-provoking degree I am pursuing here, I also deeply enjoy the sense of community coming from the collegiate system and being near everything and everyone in the town.

Aside from my studies, you may find me doing something that helps me broaden my horizons. That is why I like talking to people of different backgrounds and interests, which was exactly something that attracted me to the Telephone Appeal. In addition to bringing the alumni community together and fundraising for a good purpose, I hope this experience will help me to see my own university experiences from a number of different perspectives and give me a lot to think about regarding my future.
