Sir Thomas Allen Appeal Fund:
Extending the Legacy of Excellence in Music Performance and Participation

Having served as Chancellor of Durham University for over a decade, Sir Thomas Allen CBE will formally step down from this role in July 2022. He has been an exceptional ambassador for and within our community for generations of students.

During his tenure, Sir Thomas has inspired thousands of graduands at Congregation ceremonies and engaged passionately with our students to enrich their experience at Durham. In many special moments, he has awed and entertained alumni and supporters the world over, hosting and performing at so many wonderful events since his arrival.

In honour of this exceptional and indelible legacy, the Sir Thomas Allen Appeal Fund is established to provide support for the Durham-All Steinway Initiative and associated Music and Choral Bursaries, broadening access to some of the best instruments, tuition, and scholarships to students of all backgrounds and disciplines from around the world.

Given the significant contribution Sir Thomas has made to the musical life and ecology of the University, and the continually advancing levels of excellence and wider participation across our student community, the Fund will provide an opportunity to mark and extend the unique impact his chancellorship has enabled.

Please note:

All donors to the Fund will be recognised for their support in a special leaving programme that will be dedicated to Sir Tom and will be invited to attend celebratory events in 2022 showing the direct impact of what this Fund has achieved for our students and our wider community. Further information will be published in January 2022.

For USA Donors wishing to contribute to the Fund, please visit: and type ‘Chancellor’ into the box marked 'description' on the second page.
