Join Robert Senior, Chair of the University’s Durham Inspired Campaign and former CEO Worldwide, Saatchi & Saatchi, as he explores the complex road to recovery from the global pandemic with two expert speakers from the Durham University community: Durham parent Professor Sir John Bell, and Durham alumnus Professor Bryan Morton CBE.
Professor Sir John Bell is Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University, and played a leading role in the development of the Oxford/Astra Zeneca vaccine. He studied in Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar to train in medicine and undertook postgraduate training in London and at Stanford University before returning to Oxford as a Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellow in 1987, becoming Nuffield Professor of Clinical Medicine in 1992 and Regius Professor of Medicine in 2002. John is a Fellow of the Royal Society and was President of the Academy of Medical Sciences from 2006-2011. He was awarded the Knight Grand Cross in January 2014 for services to Medicine, Medical Research and the UK Life Science Industry. Since 2011 John has been the UK Government's Life Sciences Champion. He is a board member of Genomics England Limited, the NHS England Genomic Strategy Board, and chairs the Genomics England Limited Scientific Advisory Board.
Professor Bryan Morton CBE (MBA Durham University Business School) holds a number of senior roles within the pharmaceutical industry, including Executive Chairman and Founder of EUSA Pharma, a leading rare-disease and oncology biotech company, and he is an Operating Partner at the world renowned Private Equity firm Essex Woodlands Healthcare Partners (EWHP) who were involved in the funding and support of the firm who manufactured the early doses of the Oxford/Astra Zeneca vaccine. He is a member of the Durham Inspired campaign board, a Trustee of Occtopus (Oxford Colon Cancer Trust) and an Honorary Entrepreneurial Fellow at Durham University Business School.
Sir John will share his reflections as a member of the Vaccination Taskforce and as a pivotal member of the Oxford/Astra Zeneca team, while Professor Morton explains his own involvement in the development of two revolutionary drugs to treat the symptoms of COVID-19 which are still in clinical trial around the world. There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions as we find out more about the vital role of research in the recovery from the global pandemic.
